Neowin IRC Chat gone FTW…
soooo... this morning i had an interesting chat with a neowin fellow by the name of carmatic... flawless... obv im the one in red...
<madLyfe> umm i only have the one red X and a warning and they are the same error/warnings as the popup...
<+vip> my pc is Napalm
<+vip> ![]()
<carmatic> what does it say
<news.neowin.net> Neowin Front Page News: China fires back at Google by blocking Hong Kong search results by Brad Sams: http://www.neowin.net/news/china-fires-back-at-google-by-blocking-hong-kong-search-results
<carmatic> just something about hard disk about to fail>
<madLyfe> carmatic: the exact same thing as the errors..
<carmatic> ?
<madLyfe> word for word
<carmatic> hmm
<&The_Decryptor> Of course a few months ago I realised I could name them after the characters in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
<~Timan> thinking of calling mine TinkerBell
<carmatic> i bet that its just your raid array looking for the other hard disk
<madLyfe> carmatic, how do you turn off raid with out disrupting it?

<madLyfe> carmatic, thats what im thinking... i mean ive never seen a hard disk error like that one before..
<carmatic> why did you set up the array anyway when you could hear the disk clicking?
<madLyfe> but if they are even going to pop up an error, youd think they could have said "disk removed, or disk missing, replace disk" or something..
<madLyfe> carmatic, i really couldnt.. i mean i had to put my ear to the two to see which one it was..
<carmatic> but you could hear a hard disk clicking the moment you powered on the computer, yes?
<madLyfe> plus the case is wide open, fans and what not are noisey... plus ive been to allot of concerts...
<madLyfe> no
<carmatic> hmm
<~Colin-uk> madLyfe is just hearing things >.>
<madLyfe> lol
<&The_Decryptor> The HD in my eMac makes a loud whining/grinding sound
<carmatic> well it could be as simple as going into your bios and turning the raid off or whatever and see if windows sees the hard disk
<&The_Decryptor> I should probably get that looked at
<madLyfe> ima plug the clicker back in and see what happens..
<carmatic> dont bother, a failer on the hard disk could corrupt the data on teh good hard disk
<madLyfe> true.. but its new and empty..
<madLyfe> freshly formatted..
<carmatic> seriously, you dont have to plug or unplug anything... just turn off the raid, and see if windows sees the hard disk
<carmatic> then theres no loss in reformatting it after you took off the raid then, is it?
* HerrDoktor|lap (466@neowin/registered) Quit (Ping timeout: 61 seconds)
<madLyfe> no, but unplugging and plugging is an understatement...
<madLyfe> i should take a pic to show you...
<madLyfe> lol
<carmatic> just turn off the raid
<carmatic> even more reason to do just that
<madLyfe> ya id have to discon my monitor again, and the mouse, and keyboard.. yadda yadda yadda..
<carmatic> are you even listening?
<madLyfe> its a network server.. has no monitor or nothing.. i remote into it.. thus i cant see the boot up to get to all the raid stuff..
<carmatic> anyway raid 1 means that the hard disks should act as backups of each other, andthey should work independdently of raid... i think

<madLyfe> damnit damnit damnit.. i hate RMAing shit
<madLyfe> why cant it just work...
<madLyfe> i mean you pay money for it to work... id go to the casino if i was gunna gamble on getting good drives or not..
<madLyfe> do they not simpley power up the drives before they ship them out of the plant?
<carmatic> maybe its just too noisy in the plant??
<carmatic> like you couldnt hear the clicking, either
<madLyfe> maybe the clicking didnt start till well into the boot up process, they are not always defective at first...
<madLyfe> ive gotten the click of death at all diff time periods...
<carmatic> or maybe you knocked it abit too hard when you were installing it >.>
<~Colin-uk> it was the postman!
<madLyfe> doubtful.. they are not even installed.. they are just sitting out side the case atm...
<carmatic> then how do you know one of them was DOA without installing them?
<carmatic> and how did you set up a raid array etc without installing them
<madLyfe> ill show you.. one sec
<carmatic> are they at least plugged in
<madLyfe> obv
<carmatic> dont bother with pictures, computers shouldnt be that complicated
<madLyfe> oh but they are....
<carmatic> thats cuz you made them that way
<carmatic> seriiously, if you could just unplug them straight away, why are you complaining about having to unplug them and all that
<madLyfe> http://www.imgftw.net/img/1057161384.JPG
<carmatic> and the fact that you have handled them means that the risk is on you, no matter how little you did
<madLyfe> you dont know the hell i live.. lol
<carmatic> who knows if you have set them down a little too hard or whatever
<carmatic> maybe if you keep on breaking hard disks, then hard disks arent really for you?
<madLyfe> i have 4 36gb raptors(yes thats old, from 03) that have been move over 100miles 10 times from moving, and they still work..
<madLyfe> lol
<carmatic> yeah they could be just lucky
<madLyfe> hard disk are def not for me.. and they def are not lucky...
<~Colin-uk> just get a new drive.
<~Colin-uk> lol
<madLyfe> most impressive conversation ever...
<madLyfe> im gunna blog it real quick so i never forget it..
<madLyfe> lol
<madLyfe> uhhh how do you highlight more than one page of text in mirc?
<carmatic> you could try to use SSD's because they are shockproof
<carmatic> but im sorry to say that you would probably kill them with static electricity instead
<madLyfe> lol
